In the Phantom Blade Zero trailer, the golden-robed man who speaks the most iconic line to Soul is Zuo Shang—Soul's sworn brother, and the mastermind who forces him onto the 66-day road of no return. These brothers, once bound by life and death, now locked in mutual destruction, are the heart of the entire Phantom World story.

Once: They truly trusted each other
In year 22 of The Order, Mu Tianmiao adopted Soul and Zuo Shang as sworn sons and personally taught them martial arts. In year 25, at age thirteen, they carried out their first mission, using strategy and martial skill to successively defeat the masters of the Ming Sword at the Sword Pavilion. In year 30, they both went undercover as moles in the then most mysterious organization, Mirage, and together destroyed the Mirage airship, earning their place in a single battle—using their respective swords, 'Black Merchant' and 'Zi Ming', as code names, they became the youngest renowned envoys of The Order.
Back then, they were the only ones each could truly trust. Aboard the Mirage airship, Zuo Shang met Xuan Yu's sister, Xuan Yu, and, pretending to be sent by Xuan Yu to take her away, promised he would definitely return for her—a promise he never mentioned to Soul, and it sowed the seed for what was to come. Between Soul and Zuo Shang stood one person: Xuan Yu. She became Zuo Shang's wife, but Soul had feelings for her.

The cracks: Zuo Shang's scheme
Zuo Shang wanted to take the position of the Ming Master, and he needed Soul to become that 'master-killing traitor.' He set up a chain of schemes:
- Pang Town massacre: Using the lives of all the people in Pang Town to refine a 'coagulated blood poison pill' to extend his own life, he created the illusion that The Order was on the verge of collapse—this is the truth behind the strange plague in Pang Town in The Lost Town;
- Luring Soul to kill the master: Soul mistakenly entered the old Ming Master's secluded retreat, saw Xuan Yu's clothes, assumed she had been harmed, and killed the master in a rage—all of this was within Zuo Shang's calculations; Xuan Yu was never dead;

- Disguised as the White Prince: After Soul's defection, Zuo Shang traveled the jianghu under the righteous identity of the 'White Prince.' In Ye City, he induced factions such as Ying and Yan Cui to slaughter each other, intending to let The Order completely dominate the Wulin;
- Settling accounts with the mole: Even for the traitor Leng Tu within The Order, Zuo Shang had planned that if he truly rebelled, he would kill him even if he spared Soul—every pawn was on his chessboard.

The endgame: Xuan Yu takes the blade, and the Heart-Avoidance Technique collapses
In the final battle between Soul and Zuo Shang, Xuan Yu, who had been in a feigned death state (forty-nine days), awakened and took a fatal blow for Zuo Shang, dying. Zuo Shang's cultivation of the Heart-Avoidance Technique required cold-blooded ruthlessness—he had only mastered it after personally 'sending off' Xuan Yu. Now, the technique collapsed with his emotions, and he leapt off the cliff holding Xuan Yu's body. Soul survived, but both people most important to him perished in this feud.
What this means for you
The main plot of Phantom Blade Zero is almost certainly the settling of the feud between Soul and Zuo Shang. Knowing that they once truly trusted each other, when you look back at Zuo Shang's line in the trailer, the weight is entirely different—this is not a conventional 'hero versus villain' story, but two people who owe each other. Every choice you make in Phantom Blade Zero—whom to save, whom to trust, whom to kill—stepping on this old debt. Zuo Shang is not a one-dimensional villain; he is the other half of Soul's shadow.
